Sunriver, Oregon Travel Guide: Where to Eat, Stay & Things to Do Near Bend

If you live in Southern Oregon, Sunriver is one of those places that feels like you actually went somewhere without having to spend an entire day getting there.

Our family has been going to the Bend and Sunriver area for years. My in-laws have a vacation home in Sunriver, so it has always been an easy weekend getaway from Medford for us. I originally wrote this post back in 2019 after one of our trips when Sawyer was still a baby, and now, years later, we're still coming back.

A lot has changed since that original trip—including our family—but Sunriver is still one of my favorite places to get away for a few days.

So instead of letting this old post sit untouched in the archives, I wanted to update it with what I know now, some of our favorite places, and what I'd recommend if you're planning a trip to Sunriver or Bend, Oregon.

Sunriver vs. Bend: What's the Difference?

If you've never been to the area, Sunriver and Bend are close enough that you can easily enjoy both in one trip, but they have completely different vibes.

Bend is the larger city with tons of restaurants, shopping, breweries, parks and things to do. Sunriver is about 20 miles south of Bend and feels much more like a vacation community.

Sunriver is where I want to be when the goal is to slow down.

There are vacation homes tucked into the trees, bike paths everywhere, shops and restaurants in The Village at Sunriver and plenty to do without ever leaving the area.

But one of my favorite things about staying in Sunriver is that Bend is close enough that we can head into town whenever we want more options.

Basically: stay in Sunriver for the cozy getaway and venture into Bend when you're ready to shop, eat and explore.

Getting to Sunriver From Medford

We drive from Medford, Oregon, and it makes Sunriver such an easy weekend trip from Southern Oregon.

The drive is roughly three hours depending on weather, traffic and how many stops we make—which, when you're traveling with kids, can vary wildly.

We've made this drive enough times now that it feels familiar, but it's still one of those drives where the scenery makes it feel like you're officially leaving real life behind for a few days.

These days we're also doing the drive in our EV, which adds a little more planning around charging. On our most recent trip, we planned our charging around Chemult and Bend so we weren't scrambling once we got to Sunriver.

If you're making the drive in an EV, I definitely recommend looking at your charging options before leaving instead of assuming you'll find a fast charger when you need one.

Where to Stay in Sunriver

We're extremely lucky because my husband's family has a vacation home in Sunriver, which is where we usually stay when we're there.

That has also given us a completely different experience than simply visiting once or twice. We've gotten to experience Sunriver during different seasons and different stages of our lives—from bringing Sawyer when he was tiny to trips with friends years later.

If you don't have access to a home there, there are tons of vacation rentals throughout Sunriver. Personally, I'd choose a house or condo if you're traveling with kids or a group because having a kitchen and a comfortable place to hang out is part of what makes a Sunriver trip so good.

And if there's a hot tub? Even better.

Another option is staying at Sunriver Resort itself. One of the biggest reasons I'd consider the resort—especially for a family trip—is access to some of its amenities, including The Cove.

Things to Do in Sunriver

One of the best things about Sunriver is that you don't necessarily need a packed itinerary.

You can bike, walk the trails, hang out at the house, grab food, wander through The Village and just…be.

Which, as I've gotten older, I've learned to appreciate a lot more.

Explore The Village at Sunriver

The Village is an easy place to spend a few hours. There are local shops, restaurants, coffee, treats and seasonal activities, and everything is very walkable.

It's one of those places where you can casually wander around without feeling like you need an entire plan for the day.

You can shop, grab lunch, get ice cream and let the kids explore before heading back to the house or resort.

Bike the Sunriver Trails

Sunriver has miles of paved pathways throughout the community, so biking is huge here.

It's also one of the best ways to explore without constantly getting back into the car. Depending on where you're staying, you can bike to The Village, restaurants and other areas around Sunriver.

The Cove at Sunriver Resort

If you're staying at Sunriver Resort, The Cove is one of our favorite perks—especially when you're traveling with kids or visiting during the warmer months.

The Cove is the resort's pool and recreation area with indoor and outdoor swimming areas, a waterslide, hot tub, splash areas and plenty of space to hang out.

It's an easy way to have an entire pool day without leaving the resort.

One important thing to know when planning your trip is that The Cove isn't simply a public Sunriver pool. Access depends on where you're staying, so that's something I'd look at when comparing accommodations.

If you're deciding between a vacation rental and staying through Sunriver Resort, amenities like The Cove can make the resort worth considering for a family trip.

SHARC

SHARC—the Sunriver Homeowners Aquatic & Recreation Center—is another popular option if swimming is on your list.

There are indoor and outdoor aquatic areas, water features and other recreation options depending on the season.

Access can depend on the property you're staying at, so don't automatically assume your vacation rental includes SHARC access. Check with the property owner or management company before booking if it's important to you.

The Cove vs. SHARC: What's the Difference?

This can be a little confusing because both are swimming options in Sunriver, but they're not interchangeable.

The Cove is associated with Sunriver Resort and is one of the amenities available to eligible resort guests.

SHARC is the Sunriver Homeowners Aquatic & Recreation Center, and access can depend on whether the home or property you're staying in includes passes.

So if having a pool is a major part of your trip—especially if you're traveling with kids—I would figure out which one you'll actually have access to before booking your accommodations.

Sunriver Nature Center & Oregon Observatory

If you're looking for something different to do—especially with kids—the Sunriver Nature Center & Oregon Observatory are worth adding to your list.

The Nature Center is a fun way to learn more about Central Oregon's wildlife and natural environment. There are exhibits, nature areas and opportunities to learn about the plants and animals that live in the area.

Right next door is the Oregon Observatory at Sunriver, which is one of the more unique things you can do here.

Sunriver's darker skies make it an amazing place for stargazing, and the observatory offers opportunities to look through telescopes and learn more about what's happening in the night sky.

They also offer different daytime and nighttime programs throughout the year, so I'd check their current schedule before your trip.

If you're visiting with kids, an evening observatory experience is especially fun because it's completely different from the swimming, shopping and outdoor activities you'll probably already be doing.

Do Absolutely Nothing

This deserves its own section because sometimes this is literally the best part of Sunriver.

Coffee outside. A fire when it's cold. Fresh air. Sitting around talking. Hot tub at night. Sweatpants all day.

You don't always need to fill every hour of a trip, and Sunriver is one of my favorite places to remember that.

Where to Eat in Sunriver

You definitely don't have to drive into Bend every time you want a good meal. There are some really good options right in Sunriver too.

Lodge Kitchen at Sunriver Resort

Lodge Kitchen at Sunriver Resort is one of our favorites for either brunch or dinner when we want something a little nicer without driving into Bend.

The setting is a big part of it because you're at the resort overlooking the surrounding Central Oregon scenery.

It's a good option for a slower brunch or a nicer dinner after spending the day exploring.

Sunriver Brewing Company

Sunriver Brewing Company is another easy go-to when we're staying in Sunriver.

The Sunriver Pub is right in The Village, so it's perfect for grabbing something to eat while you're already walking around or shopping.

Even though it's a brewery, we go for the food. It's casual and family-friendly with an elevated pub-style menu, making it an easy option when you're traveling with kids or a group.

Spend a Day in Bend

Even when we're staying in Sunriver, we almost always make our way into Bend at least once.

One of my favorite areas is the Old Mill District because you can eat, shop, walk along the river and catch a movie without driving all over town.

On my most recent girls' trip, we made a whole day of it—lunch, shopping and a movie—which is exactly my kind of itinerary.

Downtown Bend is another area worth exploring, especially if you want more local shops, restaurants and boutiques.

Where to Eat in Bend

Food is obviously an important part of any trip for me, and after coming to Bend for years, we've definitely collected a few favorites.

Cafe Sintra

Cafe Sintra in downtown Bend is one of our favorite breakfast and lunch spots.

It's Portuguese-inspired and a great place to start your day before walking around downtown, shopping or heading over to the Old Mill District.

There is also a Cafe Sintra location in Sunriver, but when I'm talking about one of our Bend favorites, I mean the downtown Bend location.

Deschutes Brewery

Deschutes Brewery is kind of a classic Bend stop.

Even though we're not going for the beer, the downtown Public House is still a good casual place to grab food while you're exploring Bend.

If you're visiting Bend for the first time, it's also one of those places that has been part of the city's food and brewery scene for years.

Greg's Grill

If we're spending the day around the Old Mill District, Greg's Grill is another one of our go-to options.

It's right along the Deschutes River in the Old Mill District, so the location is hard to beat—especially if you're already shopping, walking along the river or seeing a movie nearby.

The river views are part of what makes this one such a good stop.

Zydeco Kitchen & Cocktails

Zydeco is another downtown Bend favorite and a good option when you want more of a sit-down dinner.

Their food has Southern influences mixed with Pacific Northwest ingredients, so it's a completely different experience from the casual pub-style restaurants Bend is known for.

I'd put this one on the list when you want a nicer dinner while you're in town.

Bos Taurus

If you're looking for a true fine-dining experience in Bend, Bos Taurus is the one I'd put on the list.

It's a small, high-end steakhouse in downtown Bend and feels much more like a special-occasion experience than a casual vacation dinner.

They're known for premium steaks, including Japanese A5 Wagyu, and the entire experience is more intimate and elevated.

This is where I'd go for a date night, anniversary, birthday or just one really good dinner while you're in Bend.

It's definitely on the pricier side, but if you're specifically looking for fine dining in Bend, this is one of our picks.

A Throwback From Our Original Trip

I couldn't completely rewrite this post without keeping at least a little piece of the original.

On our 2019 trip, we ate at Worthy Brewing in Bend. Jason ordered the Baxter Burger while I ordered a build-your-own pizza with pineapple.

Apparently, I was so hungry that I ate almost the entire pizza before realizing I hadn't taken a single food picture.

Very on brand.

Bend's restaurant scene is one of the reasons we continue enjoying trips over here, and this is definitely a section I'll keep updating as we find new favorites.

Shopping in Bend

If we're going into Bend, there's a very good chance shopping is involved.

The Old Mill District is my favorite easy option because there are plenty of stores in one walkable area, plus restaurants and the river right there.

Downtown Bend is another fun area to wander through if you want local boutiques and smaller shops.

I personally like having a loose plan instead of scheduling every store or stop. Pick an area, park once and wander.

Sunriver With Kids vs. a Girls' Weekend

One thing I love about this area is that I've now experienced it in completely different ways.

Our earlier trips were very much family trips. We were working around naps, feeding a baby, finding kid-friendly activities and stopping so Sawyer could look at every dog he saw.

Now I've also gotten to experience Sunriver as a girls' weekend—and it's equally good.

For a family trip, I'd focus on The Cove or SHARC, the Nature Center and Observatory, biking, The Village, outdoor activities and having plenty of downtime.

For a girls' weekend, give me good food, shopping in Bend, a movie, comfy clothes, a hot tub and nowhere I absolutely have to be.

Both versions work.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Sunriver and Bend?

Honestly, there's something to do in Sunriver and Bend year-round. The best time to visit really depends on what kind of trip you want.

Spring is when Central Oregon starts waking back up after winter. The weather can still be unpredictable—you might get sunshine, rain or even some late snow—but it's a great time to visit if you want cooler temperatures and fewer crowds. It's perfect for exploring Bend, shopping, eating your way through our favorite restaurants and getting outside when the weather cooperates.

Summer is beautiful and probably gives you the most options. This is when you can really take advantage of biking, hiking, swimming, the lakes, the river, The Cove, SHARC and all of the outdoor activities around Sunriver and Bend. It's also one of the busier times of year, so I'd plan accommodations and some activities ahead of time.

Fall is one of my personal favorites. It's cooler, cozy and perfect for the kind of weekend where you want to wear a sweatshirt, drink something warm, shop in Bend and come back to a fire or hot tub at night. You can still spend plenty of time outside without the heat of summer, and the whole area just feels extra cozy this time of year.

Winter turns Sunriver and Bend into a completely different experience, especially if you're heading toward Mt. Bachelor for skiing, snowboarding or other snow activities. Even if winter sports aren't your thing, there's something really good about a snowy Sunriver weekend spent eating good food, sitting by the fire and doing absolutely nothing.

Just keep in mind that winter—and sometimes spring—driving conditions around Central Oregon can change quickly. Always check the weather and road conditions before making the drive.

Is Sunriver Worth Visiting?

For me, absolutely.

I originally wrote about Sunriver and Bend in 2019 as a mom traveling with her baby.

Years later, I'm updating the same post after another trip and realizing how much life has happened between those visits.

That's probably part of why I love this place.

Sunriver doesn't need to be some huge, once-in-a-lifetime vacation. It's the place we go when we want a change of scenery, fresh air and a few days away from normal life.

And somehow, every season of my life has found a way to enjoy it a little differently.

If you're planning a trip to Central Oregon, I'd absolutely consider staying in Sunriver and setting aside at least one day to explore Bend. You get the quiet, cozy feel of Sunriver while still having Bend's restaurants, shopping and activities close by.

And considering how often we end up back here, I'm sure I'll have even more favorites to add the next time I update this guide.
